Chapter Eleven

The first people to wish me happy birthday are my mum, Demola, Mr. Saludeen, and Nosirat, our house help. Lucky for us, we are having a peaceful night at home, nobody but us—the residents who rightfully live in the apartment are indoors.

They sing and pray for me before each of them hand over presents they have gotten me, Demola and Nosirat included, which surprises me because neither of them has ever given me anything before, but they both know how to collect things from me.

Mum and Mr. Saludeen got me clothes, a perfume, and a boxed set of soaps and lotions for my birthday. Demola gives me five thousand naira, which I’m sure Mr. Saludeen gave him, because he doesn’t know how to save money, not to talk about him actually gifting me money, and finally, Nosirat gives me a purse. I thank them profusely for their gifts to me and after that, because my phone wouldn’t stop ringing in order to give me privacy to answer my callers, they don’t stay in my room for long.

The girls call me via group call. Which I was expecting, allowing them to share their greetings at the same time, promising me that we would all hang out soon, so they can treat me for my birthday and hand over the presents they have for me.

After the girls’ call came many more calls but none from Jide. I thought he had fallen asleep and wouldn’t have held it against him, but once the calls stopped coming in, I noticed the message he sent me.

Jide: I had given up on ever finding my soul-mate, but I was wrong because I have you now. Each day that goes by with you in it makes my world a happy place and I never want to lose that. I know you’re going to be so popular tonight, I’ve been trying to call but... See you when you wake up. Happy birthday, baby

I don’t reply his text or anyone else’s. Instead, I go to sleep and wake up at my usual time to get ready for work. Because it is my birthday doesn’t give me a pass to be late for work. I am on my phone finally replying all the texts I got before I slept, heading to the living room, when I get a whiff of perfume that comes along with Jide Harriman. When I see him, it immediately sets my heart beating in a frenzy.

That’s what he meant when he said see you when you wake up. I had my suspicions that he was going to come take me to work today, but here he is, earlier than ever, comfortably sitting on his favourite couch. Once he spies me, I watch as his face lights up. He gets up and immediately engulfs me in a full body hug before lightly pecking me on my lips.

“Happy birthday, baby. I made you breakfast.”

If it was possible for me to melt, I would long ago have found a home in a bottle he took everywhere him.
